Join us this Friday, May 2nd, as the Berkeley Population Center hosts a new panel event, “Migration Today: New Evidence From Population Scientists.” A number of top population scholars from the northern California Bay Area will give talks on emerging research on the topic of migration. This in-person event will take place in 310 Social Sciences Building, from 11am-2pm. Lunch will be provided to attendees. Zoom option not available. 

Our last Brownbag Seminar of the semester is Wednesday, April 30th, 12pm, with Shelley Clark, James McGill Professor of Sociology at McGill University. May 2 | 2-3:15pm |  Social Science Matrix |  Politics and Governance in the Digital Era: Between Populism and Technocracy.  This talk will feature Rogers Brubaker, Distinguished Professor of Sociology at UCLA, who will discuss a chapter of his recent book, Hyperconnectivity and Its Discontents. The talk will focus on the chapter “Politics,” addressing the epistemic, emotional, and organizational questions that digital hyperconnectivity imposes on governance, and the resulting tensions between democracy, populism, and technocracy. The talk is presented by the Social Effects and Normativity of Data-Mining, Algorithms, and the Digital Economy Research Team, a Social Science Matrix Research Team. Statistics Korea (KOSTAT) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) will host “the 12th KOSTAT-UNFPA Summer Seminar on Population” from 23 June to 11 July 2025.The 12th Seminar features three distinct yet consecutive training courses centered on research and methodologies. These courses address key contemporary demographic challenges, including low birth rates, aging populations, and COVID-19.  We warmly invite you to join this dynamic academic forum and help shape the future of demography.

The Role of Physicians and Healthcare Systems in Improving Population Health. Please join us for an upcoming webinar titled “The Role of Physicians and Healthcare Systems in Improving Population Health,” taking place on Thursday, May 8 at 10:00 AM PT. Hosted in collaboration by three NIA-funded P30 centers—the Center for Advancing Sociodemographic and Economic Study of Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementia (CeASES ADRD)the USC AD/ADRD Resource Center for Minority Aging Research (RCMAR), and the Roybal Center for Behavioral Interventions in Aging—this webinar will explore how physicians and healthcare systems shape population health and dementia care. The session will feature presentations from junior scholars and pilot awardees affiliated with each of the three centers. Topics will include variation in dementia diagnoses across primary care providers, healthcare use and costs among older adults living with ADRD, and clinician-focused nudging interventions. FUNDING

Spencer Foundation Research Grant. The Racial Equity Research Grants program supports education research projects that will contribute to understanding and ameliorating racial inequality in education. They are interested in funding studies that aim to understand and disrupt the reproduction and deepening of inequality in education, and which seek to (re)imagine and make new forms of equitable education. Thus, they are interested in research projects that seek to envision educational opportunities in a multiplicity of education systems, levels, settings, and developmental ranges and that reach beyond documenting conditions and paradigms that contribute to persistent racial inequalities. Funding amount: Up to $75K (over 1-5 years). Deadline: May 5, 2025.
