ANNOUNCEMENTS
SPO Policy Regarding External Funding Submissions for COVID-19 Research. To ensure proposals and awards related to COVID-19 are processed as efficiently as possible, campus PIs that plan to submit COVID-19 related proposals are asked to do two things: 1. Notify SPO that a proposal related to COVID-19 will be submitted by completing this form: COVID-19 Proposals Notification Form ; 2. Insert “COVID-19” at the beginning of the project title. Example: COVID-19: Rest of Project Title. Please note, this also applies to Material Transfer Agreements and Data Use Agreements. These two actions will enable SPO/IAO to put COVID-19 related proposals, awards, MTAs, and DUAs on the fast track when received.
SPO notice sent out to PIs contained a suggested introduction to be used when contacting sponsor representatives to request flexibilities related to late proposals, delayed reports, and other costing issues that are affecting research during the current COVID-19 health crisis. Here is the link to this guidance: https://spo.berkeley.edu/
NSF Biosketches: NSF is requiring a new format of biosketch starting June 1. Only SciEnv and the NSF Fillable PDF will be allowed. It’ll be a bit tedious and time consuming to transfer information, so plan ahead. For more information: https://www.nsf.gov/bfa/dias/
UCB Library Books are now even more available online: UCB and other libraries worked with HathiTrust to create an Emergency Temporary Access Service. It came live today for Berkeley folks (need Calnet ID). Now, while our stacks are closed, you can access most (we’re working on the analysis to verify just how many, but we believe it will be closer to 100% than to 50%) of our circulating collection) for on-screen reading (whether in copyright or not). Here is a Library news story with details. There will be a simple “Get it from HathiTrust” button in Oskicat: not there yet, it will take our IT team a few days to get that set up; the article tells you how you can search and retrieve the scanned books directly from HT in the meanwhile.) https://news.lib.berkeley.edu/
FUNDING
Gates Foundation: Innovations for Improving the Impact of Health Campaigns (Round 25). DEADLINE: 22 APR 2020 – 11:30AM PDT. This solicitation is seeking innovative solutions that accelerate the improvement of coverage, reach, efficiency, and effectiveness of mass health campaigns that deliver health products or services in low-and middle-income countries, specifically through improved planning/microplanning and focus on unreached populations. Specifically, we are looking for innovations in approaches, practices, or tools that dramatically improve the planning/microplanning that will lead to improved effectiveness of campaigns. We are also looking for innovative tools and technologies to more effectively identify and reach the most vulnerable populations when countries are designing and implementing mass campaigns. For more information, visit HERE.
The UCSF – UC Berkeley Schwab Dyslexia and Cognitive Diversity Center is pleased to share with you the attached Request for Applications/Call for Proposals. All background material and instructions can be found via the PDF attachment. The one-page Cover Sheet can be found as the Word (.docx) attachment. Please be sure to include the completed Cover Sheet with your submitted materials. We realize that this “call” emerges in the midst of our COVID shelter-in-place. We understand that some of you who might be potentially interested in applying may therefore have to await the parallel RFA that will emerge this fall. Still, we believe that it can be a sign that excellent work in the areas of interest, described in the RFA, provides a window of opportunity for funding–and a sign of hope that the clinical, research, and policy enterprises of UCSF and UC Berkeley will continue. Thanks for your attention to this RFA/Call. If you have any questions about this, feel free to contact me directly: gillette@berkeley.edu .
Firearm Injury and Mortality Prevention Research (R61 Clinical Trial Optional), Notice Number: PAR-20-143. Expiration Date: May 16, 2020. Nearly 40,000 people in the U.S. die from firearm-related deaths each year, primarily from suicide (60%) or homicide (37%), and many more have experienced non-fatal firearm injuries, both intentional and nonintentional. The Joint Explanatory Statement accompanying the FY2020 Further Consolidated Appropriations Act (H.R. 1865) included funding for the NIH to conduct research on firearm injury and mortality prevention and recommended that NIH take a comprehensive approach to studying the underlying causes and evidence-based methods of prevention of firearm injury, including crime prevention. Within the legislative mandates and limitations of NIH funding (NOT-OD-20-068, NOT-OD-20-066), the NIH encourages research to improve understanding of the determinants of firearm injury, the identification of those at risk of firearm injury (including both victims and perpetrators), the development and evaluation of innovative interventions to prevent firearm injury and mortality, and the examination of approaches to improve the implementation of existing, evidence-based interventions to prevent firearm injury and mortality. Russell Sage Foundation has issued a call for research that analyzes social, political, economic, or psychological disruptions resulting from the coronavirus crisis that affect social and living conditions in the United States. https://www.russellsage.org/
